Starbucks Gift Card FAQs

  • 1. What is the Starbucks Gift Card? (It refers to the Starbucks Gift Card offered for sale from December 29, 2014.)

    The Starbucks Gift Card is a prepaid card product issued by Starbucks (Shanghai) Trade Company Limited (the “Issuer”) and may be used by cardholders for payment in designated Starbucks stores within the territory of mainland China (the “Starbucks Store”). (Click to check Starbucks Stores that do not accept Gift Cards) The Starbucks Gift Cards are governed by the Rules for Starbucks Single-Purpose Commercial Prepaid Card as promulgated and amended, from time to time, by the Issuer (the “Rules”). (Click to check the Rules) If there are any conflicts between these FAQs and the Rules, the Rules shall prevail.

  • 2. Are Starbucks Gift Cards registered cards?

    No, Starbucks Gift Cards are unregistered cards. However, if you become a member of the My Starbucks Rewards Program via a Starbucks Gift Card, you need to provide your name and other related information during the membership registration process.

  • 3. Does the Starbucks Gift Card have an expiration date?

    Starbucks Gift Cards are valid for at least three years starting from the date of activation or the latest date of reloading (if applicable). You may check the specific expiration date on the website www.starbucks.com.cnor by calling the Starbucks customer service hotline at 400-820-6998.

  • 4. What to do when a Starbucks Gift Card expires?

    If any balance remains on the Starbucks Gift Card at its expiration date (the “Original Expiration Date”), then the expiration date of the Starbucks Gift Card will automatically be extended 30 days beyond the Original Expiration Date. On the first business day of the month following the extended expiration date (the “First Extended Expiration Date”), the Issuer will apply and deduct from the Starbucks Gift Card balance a management fee for such initial extension from. Each subsequent extension and method of extension shall be the same as above. The management fee for the initial extension is equal to the greater of RMB 2 or 1% of any remaining card balance as of the Original Expiration Date. If any balance remains on the Starbucks Gift Card as of the First Extended Expiration Date, the Starbucks Gift Card will be automatically extended for another 30 days. On the first business day of the month following the second extended expiration date, the Issuer will apply and deduct from the Starbucks Gift Card balance a management fee for such extension, equal to the greater of RMB 2 or 1% of the card balance as of the First Extended Expiration Date. The management fee for each subsequent extension shall be the same as above. The extension management fee will be directly deducted from the card balance until the balance is used up.

  • 5. How to purchase Starbucks Gift Cards?

    You may purchase a Starbucks Gift Card at a designated Starbucks Store within the territory of mainland China (Click to check Starbucks Stores that do not sell Gift Cards) by any acceptable means of payment. You may also purchase a card through other sales channels (e.g. the Starbucks mobile application (the “Starbucks App”) and the official Starbucks flagship store on Tmall - starbucks.tmall.com (the “Starbucks Tmall Store”)) by any acceptable means of payment. We do not charge card production cost or processing fee relative to the purchase of the Starbucks Gift Cards. For bulk purchases, you may also call the Starbucks customer service hotline 400-820-6998 for information.

  • 6. When I purchase a Starbucks Gift Card, shall I provide my identity information?

    You do not have to provide your personal identity information if the total purchase amount of the Starbucks Gift Cards at any one transaction does not reach to RMB 10,000. You will need to provide certain identification documents for our verification if the total purchase amount of the Starbucks Gift Cards at any one transaction is RMB 10,000 or more. You shall provide your original personal identification certificate (and, on behalf of another person, the original personal identification certificates of you and the represented person). A person acting on behalf of his/her employer will be required to provide the employer’s original business license or organization code certificate and the original of his/her own personal identification certificate. The above-mentioned identity verification shall be handled by the Issuer or at a Sales Channel designated by the Issuer, or by the Starbucks customer service hotline at 400-820-6998.

  • 7. May I give to my friends the Starbucks Gift Cards purchased in the Starbucks App as a gift?

    The Starbucks Gift Cards you purchased in the Starbucks App will be bundled into your My Starbucks Rewards account, and therefore, you may not give the cards to others as gifts or re-bundle the cards into the other My Starbucks Rewards accounts. If you wish to purchase a Starbucks Gift Card for your friend as a gift, please visit a designated Starbucks Store in mainland China, the Starbucks Tmall Store or Starbucks “Say It with Starbucks” Social Gifting Platform (the “Say It with Starbucks Platform”).

  • 8. What are the available payment means for the Starbucks Gift Card purchases?

    Starbucks Stores accept payment in cash, by credit or debit card (excluding by any credit or debit cards issued by overseas banks), and WeChat Pay and Alipay for Starbucks Gift Card purchases. Starbucks Stores do not accept checks or bank transfer as payment method. If you have a demand for bulk purchase, please call Starbucks customer service hotline 400-820-6998 for assistance by a dedicated person. For a Starbucks Gift Card purchase through a Sales Channel other than Starbucks Stores, you need to make the payment by a means of payment acceptable to such Sales Channel, including the Starbucks App. In accordance with relevant national laws and regulations, if an entity purchases the Starbucks Gift Cards in any one transaction in a total amount of RMB 5,000 or more, or if an individual purchases the Starbucks Gift Cards in any one transaction in a total amount of RMB 50,000 or more, or if an individual or entity purchases the Starbucks Gift Cards through any Sales Channels except at the Starbucks Stores, the purchaser shall make payment by wire transfer rather than in cash, and the payment shall not be made through a third-party e-payment platform (such as Alipay, etc.). The purchaser shall provide bank account information, including account name, account number and amount, etc.

  • 9. Should I sign a contract for purchasing Starbucks Gift Cards?

    At the request of the purchaser or a Starbucks Store/Sales Channel, both parties shall enter into a purchase contract for the purchase of the Starbucks Gift Cards.

  • 11. Are Starbucks Gift Cards reloadable?

    Currently, the physical Starbucks Gift Cards and electronic Starbucks Gift Cards purchased in the Starbucks App are reloadable. You may reload a Starbucks Gift Card at the designated Starbucks Stores within mainland China (Click to check the Starbucks Stores where you cannot reload the Starbucks Gift Cards) by any acceptable means of payment. You may also reload a card through other channels duly authorized by the Issuer by payment methods acceptable in such channels. The reloading channels and their locations will be announced to the public by the Issuer separately. If your Starbucks Gift Card is bundled into your My Starbucks Rewards account (when you register a My Starbucks Rewards account with a Starbucks Gift Card, this card will be automatically bundled into this account upon registration), you can reload this card directly via the Starbucks App. You can also bring your mobile device to designated Starbucks stores within mainland China (Click here to see a list of stores that do not offer in-store reload), and reload by scanning “My QR Code” on the front page of your My Starbucks Rewards account and complete the payment at the counter. Other types of reloadable Starbucks Gift Cards will be notified by the Issuer separately.   • 12. Are there any limits on the amount to reload a Starbucks Gift Card?

    The accumulated balance in a single Starbucks Gift Card shall not exceed RMB 1,000. The amount for any single reloading shall be RMB 100 or an integral multiple of RMB 100 at a Starbucks Store, or as otherwise determined by other reloading channels and/or methods.

  • 13. When I reload a Starbucks Gift Card, will my identity information be recorded?

    You are not required to provide your personal identity information if the total reloaded amount in any one transaction is less than RMB 10,000. You need to provide certain personal identification certificates for our verification if the total reloaded amount in any one transaction is RMB 10,000 or more. You will be required to provide your original personal identification certificate (and, on behalf of another person, the original personal identification certificates of you and the represented person). A person acting on behalf of his/her employer will be required to provide the employer’s original business license or organization code certificate and the original of his/her own personal identification certificate.   • 14. What are the means of payment for reloading Starbucks Gift Cards?

    You may pay the reloaded amounts in cash, by credit or debit card in the Starbucks Stores. Currently, Starbucks Stores do not accept credit or debit cards issued by overseas banks, checks or bank transfer as payment method. For a reloading transaction through a Sales Channel other than Starbucks Stores, you need to make the payment by a means of payment acceptable to such Sales Channel. In accordance with relevant national laws and regulations, if an individual reloads the Starbucks Gift Cards in any one transaction in a total amount of RMB 50,000 or more, or if an individual reloads the Starbucks Gift Cards through any Sales Channels except at the Starbucks Stores, he/she shall make payment by wire transfer rather than in cash, and the payment shall not be made through a third-party e-payment platform (such as Alipay, etc.). The individual shall provide bank account information, including account name, account number and amount, etc.

  • 15. How to obtain invoices when purchasing or reloading Starbucks Gift Cards at a Starbucks Store?

    The Starbucks sell the Starbucks Gifts Cards on behalf of the card issuer (i.e., Starbucks Shanghai Trade Co., Ltd.). You may easily request an invoice by logging onto the Starbucks Gift Card section on Starbucks China official website at https://www.starbucks.com.cn/en/starbucks-gift-card. Meanwhile, you may track the status of invoicing online. Within 30 days after purchasing or reloading a Starbucks Gift Card at a Starbucks Store, you may visit the Starbucks China official website (i.e. https://www.starbucks.com.cn/en/starbucks-gift-card), fill in the sales slip and authorization code printed on the sales receipt or the reloading receipt (if applicable), email address and other required information of the invoice. The invoice will be sent out within 10 business days after the request is accepted. If you have not received the invoice within three weeks after the request is accepted, you may call 400-820-6998 for assistance. The fapiao issuing entity is Starbucks Shanghai Trade Co., Ltd.   • 16. How can I receive an invoice for purchase or reloading of electronic Starbucks Gift Cards in the Starbucks App?

    You may request an invoice by visiting the Starbucks China official website at https://www.starbucks.com.cn/en/starbucks-gift-card (For details of the request process, please refer to the section on “How to obtain invoices when purchasing or reloading Starbucks Gift Cards at a Starbucks Store?” in these FAQs). In addition, within 30 days after purchasing or reloading an electronic Starbucks Gift Card in the Starbucks App, you may log into your My Starbucks Rewards account via the website www.starbucks.com.cn, enter into the “Invoice Management” page, select the relevant transaction, fill out the complete mailing address and relevant invoice information, and submit the request. The invoice will be sent out within 10 business days after the request is accepted. If you have not received the invoice within three weeks after the request is accepted, you may call 400-820-6998 for assistance.

  • 17. Why couldn't I receive an invoice when purchasing by Starbucks Gift Card?

    You may request an invoice when the Starbucks Gift Card is initially purchased. Therefore, no invoice will be re-issued at the time of consumption.

  • 18. May I receive Stars for my My Starbucks Rewards account when purchasing Starbucks Gift Cards, or using Starbucks Gift Cards to purchase other products?

    The prices paid for purchasing the Starbucks Gift Cards may not be used for the purposes of receiving Stars for the My Starbucks Rewards cards. However, when purchasing beverages or other products with a Starbucks Gift Card at Starbucks Stores, if your Starbucks Gift Card has been bundled into your My Starbucks Rewards account, and after the store POS reads your Starbucks Gift Card, the amount you pay with the card will be recorded in your My Starbucks Rewards account where such My Starbucks Rewards card is bundled for the purpose of receiving Stars.

  • 19. Can Starbucks Gift Cards be used multiple times?

    Currently, physical Starbucks Gift Cards and the electronic Starbucks Gift Cards you purchased in the Starbucks App may be used multiple times until the balance is used up.

  • 20. What can I do if the Starbucks Gift Card balance is incorrect?

    Please call the Starbucks customer service hotline at 400-820-6998, and our service staff will help you solve the problem.

  • 21. May I transfer the balance between different Starbucks Gift Cards?

    Currently, you cannot transfer the balance between different Starbucks Gift Cards.

  • 22. May I use a Starbucks Gift Card to pay part of the purchase price (if the balance on the card is insufficient)?

    Yes. You may pay by Starbucks Gift Card and other means of payment acceptable to Starbucks Stores, such as in cash or by bank card.

  • 23. In case of a purchase return, will the amount be refunded to my Starbucks Gift Card?

    If a cardholder requests to return the products purchased with a Starbucks Gift Card in compliance with the Starbucks Stores’ rules on returns, any amount you paid with the card when purchasing such product will be refunded to such Starbucks Gift Card. The validity term of the Starbucks Gift Card will not change as a result of such return. If the original Starbucks Gift Card does not exist and the amount to be refunded is no more than RMB 100, the payment may be made in cash. If the original Starbucks Gift Card does not exist and the amount to be refunded is more than RMB 100, the Starbucks Store will issue to the cardholder one or more new Starbucks Gift Card(s) in the amount of an integral multiple of RMB 100 with any remaining refund amount of less than RMB 100 paid in cash.

  • 24. How do I check the balance on the card?

    You may visit the Starbucks China’s official website (i.e. https://www.starbucks.com.cn/en/starbucks-gift-card/), or call the Starbucks customer service hotline at 400-820-6998 to check the card balance. You may also ask a Starbucks barista to check the balance when purchasing products at a Starbucks Store. If your Starbucks Gift Card is successfully bundled into your My Starbucks Rewards account, you can check the balance of the relevant Starbucks Gift Card by visiting https://www.starbucks.com.cn/en/account/ or the Starbucks App.

  • 25. May I receive SMS alerts on consumption and balance?

    Currently, such service is not available.

  • 26. I have multiple Starbucks Gift Cards. Can I bundle all of my cards into the same account?

    Yes. You may bundle up to 15 Starbucks Gift Cards (including physical and electronic Starbucks Gift Cards) into a single My Starbucks Rewards account at the same time.

  • 27. Can I pay for a single order by using multiple Starbucks Gift Cards?

    Yes. At checkout, you may pay by using multiple Starbucks Gift Cards or other payment methods acceptable to Starbucks Stores (such as in cash or by bank card). If you choose to use multiple bundled Starbucks Gift Cards for payment, you may need to scan in turn various dynamic QR codes representing different bundled Starbucks Gift Cards in your My Starbucks Rewards account to complete your payment.

  • 28. For any bundled physical Starbucks Gift Cards, can I continue to use the physical cards?

    Yes. You can still use your physical Starbucks Gift Cards just as you normally would.

  • 29. Can I remove a bundled Starbucks Gift Card from my account?

    When and only when the balance in a Starbucks Gift Card reaches zero, you will be able to remove the card from your My Starbucks Rewards account after logging into the account via www.starbucks.com.cn/en/account/ or in the Starbucks App. You may re-bundle the removed Starbucks Gift Cards into the same account, but not into any other My Starbucks Rewards account or use it for the registration of any other My Starbucks Rewards account.

  • 30. Is it safe to use the Starbucks Gift Card mobile pay function?

    In order to ensure the security of the funds stored in your Starbucks Gift Cards, please take good care of your physical Starbucks Gift Cards and your mobile devices and take all measures to ensure your account security. Please take security measures to protect your My Starbucks Rewards account password and update the password from time to time to prevent any leakage of your account information. We also strongly recommend that you set up and turn on the PIN code in the Starbucks App when you bundle your Starbucks Gift Cards to the account. Each time you make a purchase and use the Starbucks Gift Card mobile pay function at a Starbucks store, the Starbucks store will only accept payment by scanning the dynamic QR code displayed in your account (and such QR code will be updated periodically). Any QR codes shown in other forms (including, without limitation, a screenshot or scanned picture of the QR codes) will not be acceptable at Starbucks stores.

  • 31. What should I do if the Starbucks Gift Card is missing or stolen?

    Starbucks Gift Cards are unregistered cards, and are not reportable for loss. If the physical Starbucks Gift Cards are lost or stolen, you will bear the economic losses on your own. Please take proper care. If the lost physical Starbucks Gift Card is bundled into your My Starbucks Rewards account, after the loss or theft of the physical card, you may visit www.starbucks.com.cn/en/account/, and apply for freezing and transferring the balance amount stored in the lost or stolen Starbucks Gift Card (the “Funds Protection”). As it may take some time for us to process your application, the Funds Protection may not take immediate effect. Once the Funds Protection application is approved, we will generate a virtual Starbucks Gift Card, bundle it into your account, and transfer the entire balance from the original card to the new electronic card. In the meantime, the lost or stolen physical Starbucks Gift Card can no longer be used. Please note that the validity term of the newly generated and bundled electronic Starbucks Gift Card will be the same as that of the original physical card. You will bear the risks associated with any loss of funds resulting from the loss or theft of the original physical Starbucks Gift Card.

  • 32. How can I better protect the balance stored in the Starbucks Gift Card bundled in my account and prevent any embezzlement?

    In order to ensure the security of the funds stored in your Starbucks Gift Cards, please take good care of your physical Starbucks Gift Cards and your mobile devices and take all measures to ensure your account security. Please take security measures to protect your My Starbucks Rewards account password and update the password from time to time to prevent any leakage of your account information. We also strongly recommend that you set up and turn on the PIN code in the Starbucks App when you bundle or purchase your Starbucks Gift Cards in the Starbucks App.

  • 33. What should I do if, after a Starbucks Gift Card is bundled or after the purchase of an electronic Starbucks Gift card via the Starbucks App, my mobile phone is lost or stolen?

    If a Starbucks Gift Card is bundled or an electronic Starbucks Gift card is purchased via the Starbucks App, after your mobile phone is lost or stolen, we recommend that you log into your account by visiting www.starbucks.com.cn/en/account/ immediately and use the “one-click log out” function to force a mandatory log out of your My Starbucks Rewards account from all devices (including desktop computers and mobile devices). At the same time, we recommend that you set up and turn on the PIN code in the Starbucks App when you bundle or purchase your Starbucks Gift Card via the Starbucks App.

  • 34. Can I replace a physical Starbucks Gift Card after the card is bundled into a My Starbucks Rewards account?

    If the physical card of your Starbucks Gift Card cannot be used as a result of destruction or damage, you may continue to use the Starbucks Gift Card via the Starbucks Gift Card mobile pay function. If you still wish to own a physical card at the same time, you may call our customer hotline at 400-820-6998 for card replacement (please refer to the “What to do if the physical card is damaged or demagnetized?” section below in these FAQs for the details regarding the card replacement process). After a replacement card is issued, the original bundled physical Starbucks Gift Card will be automatically removed from the account, and you may need to bundle the new card into your account. If your physical Starbucks Gift Card has been used for the registration of a My Starbucks Rewards account, the card replacement will not affect your My Starbucks Rewards account, but this Starbucks Gift Card will be automatically removed from the account and you may need to bundle the new card into your account.

  • 35. Can Starbucks Gift Cards be returned?

    Yes, provided that the Starbucks Gift Card shall be returned by the original purchaser and such return shall be handled through the channel designated by the Issuer. To request a return, the purchaser shall provide required proof documents according to relevant requirements. We will handle the refund within 20 business days from your submission of the request.

  • 36. Are there any processing fees for return of Starbucks Gift Cards?

    Yes. For the return of a Starbucks Gift Card, the processing fee will be equal to 2% of the balance amount in one card, or total balance of two or more cards, with the minimum fee being RMB 20 Yuan. Upon deduction of the above processing fee, the balance on the Starbucks Gift Card will be refunded to the bank card used by the purchaser when purchasing the Starbucks Gift Card (applicable when the purchase was made with a bank card), or the bank account opened in the name of the purchaser (applicable when the purchase was made in a manner other than with a bank card). Please note that if you reload your Starbucks Gift Card through different channels (such as at a Starbucks Store and through online channels), upon return of your Starbucks Gift Card, the balance in your card will be refunded to the bank card or the account corresponding to the other reloading payment method by which you originally reloaded your card.

  • 37. What should I do if the physical card of a Starbucks Gift Card is damaged or demagnetized?

    If you need to replace a physical Starbucks Gift Card as it cannot be used as a result of damage or for any other reason, after the personnel designated by the Issuer verifies that such Starbucks Gift Card is issued by the Issuer and there is a balance on the card, the Cardholder may go through procedures for replacement at a venue designated by the Issuer. You shall pay a processing fee for such replacement. The processing fee for each replacement of the physical card is RMB 10, which shall be directly deducted from the balance on the Starbucks Gift Card. If the balance is insufficient and you still wish to replace the physical card, you shall pay the remainder of the processing fee in cash or other means of payment.
